Leicester, UK - 7th November, 2024 - Sheldon Rehab celebrates the creation of Malone Meadows, a new one-acre farm space at The Carpenter’s Arms in Loughborough, which will support addiction recovery through hands-on therapeutic work with nature.

This transformative project not only helps residents focus on a healthy future, but also strengthens the centre’s eco-friendly and sustainable initiatives.

The Carpenter’s Arms, a charity dedicated to assisting men with drug and alcohol addiction, is converting a piece of wasteland into a sustainable farm space.

The meadow will allow residents to grow fruits and vegetables, raise chickens, and keep bees, playing an integral role in recovery programs. Sheldon Rehab’s addiction specialist, Karen Jones, underscores the benefits of such holistic, nature-based approaches in recovery.

“At Sheldon Rehab, we see daily the impact of meaningful activities like gardening and nurturing animals on the path to recovery, particularly for those in alcohol rehab in Leicester,” said Karen Jones. “Projects like Malone Meadows are an invaluable part of healing, offering individuals the chance to step outside of their struggles, build new skills, and find a sense of purpose and accomplishment. It’s wonderful to see this kind of innovative, person-centred support expanding in our region.”

With the support of generous donors, including £36,000 from The Carpenter’s Arms and £20,000 from the community, the meadow will soon feature chicken coops, fruit trees, and vegetable plots.

Named Malone Meadows in memory of Brendan Malone, a former supporter and beloved figure at the charity, the project is a tribute to his commitment to improving the lives of those battling addiction.

Richard Spence, Chief Executive of The Carpenter’s Arms, shared that the meadow will not only honour Brendan’s legacy but also reduce the charity’s food expenses by an estimated £1,000 to £2,000 monthly.

Jones praised the project’s sustainable focus, noting that environmental initiatives are a valuable aspect of recovery programs. “Reducing costs through sustainability is both practical and empowering.

It gives residents a direct role in providing for themselves and their community. At Sheldon Rehab, we recognise the significance of integrating environmental responsibility into our programs, as it enhances both physical and mental well-being.”

The natural, peaceful setting of Malone Meadows will help residents focus on their recovery journey, offering a place to cultivate resilience, grow food, and support themselves through purposeful work. By engaging in activities like gardening and animal care, residents experience reduced stress, improved self-esteem, and a renewed sense of optimism.

Sheldon Rehab commends The Carpenter’s Arms and all community contributors for creating a space that fosters growth, independence, and recovery.

“We are hopeful this project will inspire similar initiatives throughout the region,” Jones added, “and Sheldon Rehab looks forward to collaborating with community partners to provide the comprehensive, holistic care essential to lasting recovery.”
