We can all relate to the time spent searching with frustration for a hidden, open parking spot. And yet, in crowded cities around the world, NRIA says, a not-so-new technology is already transforming parking for the better.
That's good news for the town of West New York, New Jersey, one of the most densely populated areas in all of America. There, NRIA is incorporating a state-of-the-art automated parking system into its latest residential development, The Station.
The Station, a luxury complex under construction at 4901 Bergenline Ave., will include a parking garage that parks cars without their driver inside. This "parking automat system" is described by NRIA as parking cars "vending machine style," using a mechanized hydraulic system.
Engineered by Klaus, a Germany-based company, the automated parking system allows drivers to drive up to the parking garage and then onto a parking platform, where they exit their vehicle. The fully-automated parking system takes it from there, transporting their vehicle onto a rotating platform and then placing it into an open spot on the best available parking floor.
"The driver registers their car using a physical interface at the garage's site, or by using an app on their phone," says Anthony Gramuglia, Communications Manager for the Secaucus-based NRIA. "It saves time for the driver and space for the community. These kinds of parking garages take up less space because driving lanes aren't needed, and more cars can fit in the garage than a traditional garage of the same size."
The Station's garage will be able to house 54 vehicles at a time, while traditional parking methods would allow for only 22 parking spaces at the site, according to NRIA.
Klaus, which has automated parking systems in as many as 80 countries, first introduced the parking automat system in 1988. By 1993, the fully automated car parking system was engineered. And while this kind of parking system is commonplace in Europe and other parts of the world, the United States had yet to get on board.
Until now.
"America is just starting to catch on with this technology," says NRIA's Gramuglia. "But here at NRIA, we are always looking for forward-thinking tech that can make lives easier and better. This kind of parking system is good for everyone. It's cost-effective, efficient, and excellent for the environment. In 20 years, automated parking will be de rigueur, and traditional parking garages will be old-fashioned."
As Gramuglia notes, there are a multitude of advantages to an automated parking system like the one to be installed at The Station by NRIA. Without people parking their cars themselves, vehicles can be parked closer to one another. Room isn't needed to allow people to get out of their cars. That's an obvious space saver and makes for more room in the garage for additional cars.
And with no pedestrians sharing space with the cars in the garage, there are fewer accidents and fewer chances for people to get hurt. Harmful emissions are reduced, as no one is driving around looking for a spot, and cars are turned off as they are transported.
Automated parking garages are also more manageable for disabled individuals who can exit their car on ground level and not have to navigate steep inclines or stairwells.
