WomenHeart is the first and only national patient-centered organization dedicated to serving women living with heart disease. WomenHeart was founded in 1999 by three women, Nancy Loving, Jackie Markham, and Judy Mingram, who had heart attacks in their 40s and misdiagnoses, inadequate treatment and social isolation. The Wenger Awards are named after Nanette Kass Wenger, MD, a pioneer in women’s cardiology, and give recognition to individuals and organizations for their extraordinary contributions to women’s heart health. Now in its 23rd year, WomenHeart has developed a network of nationwide patient support groups, trained women heart disease survivors as community educators, hosted bi-annual conferences and more.

“Advocacy is a critical step to improving the health of women who have for too long been understudied, undertreated and misdiagnosed,” said Dr. Rosen, a renowned cardiologist for more than 30 years. “I am deeply honored to receive the Wenger Award for Excellence in Medical Advocacy from WomenHeart and this honor is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team at Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health, who are committed to advancing women’s health through sex- and gender-informed clinical care, research and education.”

Dr. Rosen has been a champion for women’s heart health throughout her career and remains a practicing cardiologist. She is a recognized leader in the field of cardiology with a focus on improving health outcomes for women. Her leadership at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health has created a model for how to improve the health of women across their lifespans and define the standards for comprehensive and multi-disciplinary care delivery. She is a current member of the Scientific Advisory Council for WomenHeart and a long-time volunteer for the American Heart Association, receiving the physician of the year award in 2021. Her advocacy for women’s heart health and eliminating gender disparities in health care has inspired and improved the lives of women.

The award was presented to Dr. Rosen at the Wenger Awards Dinner on May 1, 2023, in Washington, D.C. along with other award honorees, including:

  • Emelia Benjamin, MD, ScM, FACC, FAHA, Excellence in Medical Research
  • Gary Gibbons, MD, Excellence in Public Service
  • Malissa Wood, MD, FACC, Excellence in Medical Leadership
  • Anahad O’Connor, Excellence in Media
  • Roxanne Watson, Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes Award for Champion Excellence

“Dr. Rosen has dedicated her career to improving the lives of women living with heart disease and other conditions,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “She is a champion and role model for others, not just in the clinical space but across the health care industry.”

The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is dedicated to improving the health of women across their lifespan, bridging the gap between wellness and personalized care delivery. With a single focus on women, the Katz Institute provides a complete healthcare connection and defines the standards of excellence in patient-centered women’s health care. The Katz Institute is a convener and amplifier of Northwell Health’s women’s health initiatives, focused on supporting sex- and gender-specific research, providing expert, coordinated clinical care and educating the community on prevention and well-being.
