EdSource Announces New CEO

EdSource, a nonprofit journalism organization focused on education in California, announced that it has hired a new CEO, Deborah Clark, who will start Jan. 6, 2025.

Clark has spent an award-winning career in mission-driven storytelling, both as a journalist and as an executive. For many years she was the general manager of public radio’s Marketplace, where she led the enterprise’s transformation from a legacy broadcast operation into a multi-platform shop, including the successful launch of several successful podcasts including “Make Me Smart,” “The Uncertain Hour” and “Millions Bazillions.”

She has worked across public media in television and radio, and in addition to stints at NPR and the PBS newsmagazine California Connected, she had a hand in the launch of public radio programs like “Weekend America” and “The Takeaway.” She has driven collaborations with organizations including The New York Times, the BBC and “Frontline.” More recently, she was a senior fellow at the Difference Engine, an interdisciplinary center at Arizona State University that creates tools and products that address inequality. Clark has her own company, BikerLass Productions, that works with organizations to align their content and business strategies.

“I’m thrilled to join the EdSource team,” Clark said. “The work the organization does to decode and translate California’s vast public education system for its audiences — from parents to policymakers — is invaluable. I look forward to taking the organization to the next level.”

According to Jannelle Kubinec, EdSource’s board president, “Deborah understands the important role that education plays in addressing economic mobility. This, paired with her skill at recognizing and conveying a story, makes for engaging and accessible journalism with impact.”

Clark is only the fifth CEO in EdSource’s 47-year history, underscoring the organization’s stability and continuity over many decades.
