AOMedia’s Adoption Showcase Spotlights AV1 as the Future of Video

ATEME, Bitmovin, Google, VideoLAN, Vimeo, and Visionular share in their own words how AV1 is making an impact on their business and customers.

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) is proud to announce the launch of its Adoption Showcase, featuring user stories from six AV1 adopters. This showcase highlights the benefits achieved by ATEME, Bitmovin, Google, VideoLAN, Vimeo, and Visionular through the adoption of the AV1 codec. Additionally, more adopter stories will be added to the showcase in the coming months, providing further insights into the benefits and applications of AV1.

"The continuing adoption and positive impact that AV1 has had indicates it is playing an important role in the ecosystem," said AOMedia Executive Director Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, who is featured in a Q&A blog here. "These user stories illustrate the real-world impact of AV1 — whether through streaming services, virtual classrooms, mobile video apps, or chat platforms."

AV1 video is becoming increasingly integral to daily life, reducing streaming and storage costs. Consider that Apple's latest media engine, featured in iPhone 15 Pro models with the A17 Pro chip and Macs equipped with M3 chips, now includes a dedicated AV1 decoder. Approximately 95% of Netflix's catalog is encoded with AV1; over 50% of YouTube's catalog (weighted by watch time) is available in AV1; and more than 70% of Meta Reels (by watch time) on iOS utilize AV1. The widespread adoption of AV1, supported by tens of millions of AV1-enabled Intel CPUs and GPUs, underscores the growing importance of this codec in delivering superior video experiences across platforms.

Adopter User Stories Highlighted in the Adoption Showcase

The showcased adopter stories demonstrate how AV1 has enabled industry leaders to deliver compelling media experiences while achieving lower bitrates.

  1. ATEME: By integrating AV1, ATEME has optimized video delivery, enhancing streaming quality and reducing latency for live broadcasts.
  2. Bitmovin: Bitmovin's implementation of AV1 has resulted in significant bandwidth savings, enabling smoother and more efficient video streaming for users worldwide.
  3. Google: Google has leveraged AV1 to improve video playback on the Chrome browser, in Google Meet, on Android, and on YouTube, delivering higher-resolution content with less buffering and lower data consumption.
  4. VideoLAN: The adoption of AV1 by VideoLAN resulted in the creation of dav1d, an AV1 software decoder, which enables enhanced video quality and playback efficiency on mobile devices without a hardware decoder.
  5. Vimeo: Vimeo's integration of AV1 has allowed for high-quality video streaming and storage solutions, benefiting both content creators and viewers with improved visual experiences.
  6. Visionular: Visionular's implementation of AV1 technology using AI and machine learning (ML), has enabled better compression efficiency and higher-quality streaming, enhancing the overall user experience.
