Canairi is a Playful, Fresh Air CO2 Monitor
Acting as a Canary in a Coal Mine for the House

Canairi, the revolutionary new fresh air monitor that improves indoor air quality through playful storytelling, is live on global fundraising platform Kickstarter and a breakout crowdfunding success story having already raised over $250K.

Back in the day, mine workers would bring a canary with them in the coal mine, to detect toxic gases as the birds are more sensitive to harmful gases than humans. When the canary fainted, that was the sign to get out. With a built-in CO2-censor, Canairi works exactly the same way - but in the house. When the air quality indoors is poor the bird will physically spin and drop down, until windows are open and fresh air is let back in.

“We spend 90% of our time indoors in developed countries and 80 million European families live in homes with a poor indoor climate. A poor indoor climate increase the risk of asthma, fatigue, headache and sleep disorders; while a good indoor climate can double cognitive performance at offices and schools,” says co-founder Hans Augustenborg on the inspiration behind the project. “Our vision is to improve the health and well-being of millions of people, by improving the indoor air quality of homes around the world with our little bird.”

Canairi is an award-winning design that strips annoying sensors, blinking lights, ringing alarms and harmful blue-lights from screens with an intuitive storytelling language that children and adults can instinctively understand. When the canary is flipped down, that means it is time to open the windows and let fresh air in; when the bird swings back up the air is once again clean and fresh.

Canairi’s simple design hides its powerful technology; it is equipped with a CO₂-sensor monitor that activates the canary if the level of CO₂ passes 1.000 ppm (the threshold recommended by health authorities worldwide). It’s made of recycled plastic and comes with a wall-mount & a rechargeable battery that will work for 3 months, before it needs to be charged with a USB cable.

“Unlike other air quality monitors, Canairi will let you know when to ventilate your home without the use of light, sound, digital displays or phone notifications. Canairi stands out by using storytelling and gamification as nudging mechanisms to encourage the user to take action,” adds co-founder Andreas Kofoed Sørensen. “The democratic design language also makes it simple for children to understand, but also invites the minimalist adult to play along.”
