New Illicit Drug Referred To As "Cheese Heroin" Concerning Experts

A new illicit drug affecting youths nationwide concerns addiction experts like Dr. David Campbell of Recover Together Bend. "Cheese heroin,” is a combination of black tar heroin and crushed Tylenol PM tablets, is usually snorted through a straw. It is highly addictive and very dangerous.

A new illicit drug that is growing in popularity in communities across the country is concerning addiction experts. Known on the streets as “cheese heroin,” the drug is actually a combination of black tar heroin mixed with crushed Tylenol PM tablets. The tan-colored powder is usually snorted through a straw. It is highly addictive, very dangerous and is finding its way into middle and high schools nationwide, says addiction specialist David Campbell, DSW, LMFT, Program Director for Recover Together Bend (RTB) in central Oregon.

“Among the reasons for its fast growth are its cheap cost ($10/gram $2/bump) and concealability as it is frequently packaged in tiny bindles or in baggies,” he explains. “Like heroin, it represses the respiratory system and if taken in large quantities or coupled with alcohol can be especially dangerous and even lead to cardiac arrest.”

Campbell warns of symptoms Including drowsiness and lethargy, euphoria, disorientation, sleepiness, hunger, sudden change in grades and friends. Withdrawal, which can be severe and begin even just a few hours after use, is characterized by headache, chills, nausea, vomiting, muscle pains and spasms, anxiety, agitation, disorientation and disassociation.

Recover Together Bend offers customized inpatient care at its five-acre, 15-bed residential facility. After detox, clients undergo 30- to 90-day programs involving individual, group, family and experiential forms of therapy. Each patient’s treatment plan, which is customized to meet their individual needs, is designed with long-term sobriety as a goal.
