Signifi's 'Planet DVD' division allows entrepreneurs to compete against Redbox

By: PRLog
PR Log - Jul 02, 2012 - Toronto, ON – With the growing demand and adoption of DVD kiosks, entrepreneurs see tremendous opportunity in becoming independent kiosk owner operators. On the flip side, the behemoth in the marketplace poses as a formidable opponent for smaller operators who lack expertise and resources to compete.  Signifi announces it has made a substantial investment in launching an independent operator focused division, Planet DVD (http://www.planetdvdkiosk.com), to level the playing field for these operators.

"A huge opportunity exists for new operators as Redbox cannot cover all lucrative cross-country locations singlehandedly," says Shamira Jaffer, CEO of Signifi. “Planet DVD’s purpose is to give small operators access to industry experts, business tools and marketing muscle to effectively compete,” says Jaffer.

Jim Gormley, a veteran of 25 years in the movie industry, has been appointed to lead the Planet DVD effort. “The investment in building the Planet DVD brand, creating an affiliate marketing program and building a location finder solution will greatly enhance the operator’s performance.” He continues, “The icing on the cake comes by adding the revenue generating digital signage network that will directly impact their bottom line.”

Today’s marketplace has several vendors that distribute Asian built DVD kiosks, leaving them with very little control over the technology they sell. Signifi designs its own technology in-house and manufactures in North America.  “We engineer with the operator in mind" said Says Michael Rigato, VP of New Product Development. “By tightly integrating the hardware and software we can simplify maintenance for the operator. At the end of the day, it is about reducing operational costs."

Giving operators an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and outdoor ready kiosk is already a big advantage. Further enhancing the operators lead is modularity, an idea born from Signifi’s thoughtful engineering. When lineups become an issue, a Planet DVD operator need only add an extension module, instantly allowing two people to rent or return at the same time. This translates to lower cost and less square footage requirements versus adding another unit, as Redbox does.

"Coinstar has validated the kiosk market so, improving the customer experience is another great opportunity to differentiate ourselves," said Shaun Hunte, who brings his marketing expertise to PlanetDVD. Today’s customers want speedy transactions and crave wide selection.  A disc dispenses in 7 seconds compared to 25 seconds at Redbox and more capacity means more choice for the customer.

Planet DVD will give operators access to an exclusive resource center that is filled with useful information gathered from the experience of the hundreds of operators using Signifi's kiosks.
