UGL Services Supports National Geographic LEED Recertification

The National Geographic Society today praised UGL Services, a division of UGL Limited (ASX: UGL), for the services it provided during the Society’s recent LEED recertification of its facilities here. UGL Services was responsible for contributing eight green cleaning credits out of the 59 LEED credits required for the most recent recertification.

The National Geographic headquarters building was the first facility to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Existing Building (EB) certification (Silver) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2003. It has since continued to recertify its 899,000 sq. ft. three-building campus, moving up to the Gold level for the performance period of 2008, 2009 and again for 2010 and 2011.

UGL Services has been supporting the Society since 1998 – even before it embarked on its LEED certification efforts – with UGL Services GreenClean, porter services, painting, office moves, event setups and emergency services. As such, it has been instrumental in the Society’s LEED initiatives.

“Achieving and maintaining LEED certification requires the commitment of every staff member and contractor,” said Frank Candore National Geographic Society Chief Engineer and LEED Project Leader. “UGL Services has been an integral partner in our sustainability efforts from the start. It helped us not only achieve LEED certification but consistently maintain the highest standards in our everyday operations.”

UGL Services’ 50 employees constantly strive to maintain compliance on a daily basis. UGL Services also helps the National Geographic Society monitor and report green cleaning performance to help the Society document results and prepare for future recertifications.

For its areas of responsibility, UGL Services contributed eight of the 59 LEED certification credits for the latest recertification. The multiple credits within the “Indoor Environmental Quality” section included:

  • Green Cleaning Policy (Prerequisite)
  • Green Cleaning-High Performance Cleaning Program (1 credit)
  • Green Cleaning-Custodial Effectiveness Assessment (2 credits)
  • Green Cleaning-Sustainable Cleaning Products and Materials (3 credits)
  • Green Cleaning-Sustainable Cleaning Equipment (1 credit)
  • Green Cleaning-Entryway Systems (1 credit)
