PRLog - May 21, 2013 - TORONTO, Canada -- “No Ordinary Apple: A Story About Eating Mindfully,” by Sara Marlowe, will be officially launched at The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St. W. on June 9, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Sara Marlowe is a clinical social worker university lecturer and musician. Elaine Smookler, Toronto-based performer and mindfulness teacher, will host the launch, which will feature live music, mindfulness activities, ‘gratitude’ mural making and illustrations from the book for children to colour. The audience will be invited to experience mindful eating first hand with organic apples generously provided by Toronto’s own Mama Earth Organics, Sara’s weekly supplier of organic garden goodies.

“No Ordinary Apple” is illustrated by Philip Pascuzzo, designer  of the iconic 'Twitter' bird.  Watch the book trailer on Youtube for a sneak peak of some of Philip’s vibrant illustrations.

“No Ordinary Apple” has received much advance praise. New York Times Best-selling author Sharon Salzberg commented, "We often hear ourselves telling children to pay attention but we don’t often teach children HOW to pay attention. This book does just that and it is deliciously fun to read."

CM Magazine 'highly recommends' No Ordinary Apple - “This is an excellent tale about the wonders of food…a great addition to any collection." Publisher’s Weekly stated, “Parents will appreciate the call to slow down and pay attention, advice that’s good for a lifetime. For children, the book will open new perspectives on the fruit of knowledge.”

No Ordinary Apple comes at an opportune time. "Children are constantly bombarded with attention zappers," says author Sara Marlowe, "from video games to fast-paced commercials, leaving their minds jumping from one thing to the next. Mindful eating provides an antidote. I wrote this book to provide a fun and engaging way for kids to focus on and explore one thing at a time, thus building their attention span. Mindful eating resonates with kids because it can be playful – they love to be asked to listen to a raisin or an apple or even a piece of pizza! Also, sharing a meal together, away from the distractions and busy demands of everyday life, creates a space for children and families to be present not only with their food, but with each other.”

Sara Marlowe states, “Kids are surrounded by unhealthy food and manipulative marketing that encourages their consumption. Mindful eating is a way to support children to develop awareness of how they feel after eating, rather than simply eating on automatic pilot. Kids may then make healthier food choices – both in content and portion, which is critical when childhood obesity is an epidemic in North America.”

No Ordinary Apple is published by Wisdom Publications and distributed in Canada by PGC. info@pgcbooks.ca Cost is $19.95 CDN and the ISBN is 9781614290766. Cloth, 36 pages. Publication date is June 11, 2013. It is available for pre-order through most major booksellers. Autographed copies will be available for sale at the event.
