KLESCHICK AWARDED INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Dow AgroSciences’ Isoclast™ Active, eNtrench™ Also Receive Honors

Bill Kleschick, Ph.D., Global Discovery Leader, Dow AgroSciences, has been awarded Agrow’s Lifetime Achievement Award during its awards ceremony in Amsterdam on Oct. 29. The prestigious international Agrow Awards honor corporate and individual excellence in the crop protection and production industry.

During a career that spans more than 30 years, Kleschick has made many outstanding contributions to worldwide crop protection through creative inventions, scientific achievements, mentorship and forward-thinking, strategic leadership. Examples of his many accomplishments include discovery of the sulfonamide class of herbicides (seven active ingredients utilized in 239 commercial products and registered in 78 countries), leadership in novel plant trait discovery and development, development of cutting-edge technologies for the discovery process and contributions to the external scientific community.

In fact, Kleschick has authored/co-authored 33 scientific publications, holds 38 U.S. patents, given more than 30 external presentations, and is a longtime reviewer for premier chemistry publications.

According to Agrow, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual with a distinguished career in the crop protection and production industry, as well as a consistent history of service that goes above and beyond the call of duty.

“Bill Kleschick is an unwavering champion for scientific discovery and advancement, and his work has been integral to both the breadth and depth of Dow AgroSciences’ success,” said Daniel R. Kittle, Vice President, Research and Development, Dow AgroSciences. “Bill also is an inspirational leader, helping the next generation of researchers reach their potential in the agricultural sciences. I can’t think of a more deserving individual to be recognized with the Agrow Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“Few individuals have helped shape such a broad range of chemical and trait technology offerings and left such a legacy of products, work processes, and future leaders,” said Jim Turner, Consultant, IVCC (International Vector Control Consortium), who has worked with Kleschick for more than 25 years and nominated him for the award. “Dr. Kleschick’s many contributions to the greater scientific community range from basic SAR studies and synthetic methodologies to a pragmatic role for combinatorial agrochemical discovery.”

Dow AgroSciences was also recognized for industry-leading technology and innovation with an international Agrow Award in the category of “Best New Crop Protection Product or Trait.”

The winning entry was:

Best New Crop Protection Product or Trait: Isoclast™ Active
Isoclast is the sole member of the new sulfoximines chemical class of insecticides, which was launched in two formulations in June 2013: TRANSFORM® WG and CLOSER® SC. Isoclast active is effective at low use rates and has been developed globally in all major crop groups, including cotton, leafy and fruiting vegetables, apples, cereals, citrus, cole crops, grapes and soybeans.

In addition to the winning entry, Dow AgroSciences was also named a finalist in the category “Best Formulation Innovation” for eNtrench™. eNtrench is a microencapsulated formulation of our nitrapyrin nitrogen stabilizer that allows it to be applied with both liquid and solid nitrogen fertilizers to the soil surface. It improves the nitrogen uptake of plants by keeping nitrogen in the ammonium form longer. This innovation allows nitrification inhibition to expand beyond the U.S. anhydrous ammonia market to the rest of the world, including formulations of aqueous ammonia in Australia, dry urea in China and liquid fertilizer in the United Kingdom.
