Higher open on Draghi's comments

The markets opened sharply higher with the Dow soaring 148 points to 17,880 after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said that the ECB was prepared to stimulate the euro zone economy. Nasdaq climbed 32 points to 5,105.


On the upside


24/7 Wall St. noted that Sarepta Therapeutics (Nasdaq: SRPT) Duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment eteplirsen was superior to competing products.


KaloBios (Nasdaq: KBIO) named Martin Shkreli to the position of chief executive officer.


Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) reported sharply higher third quarter earnings that beat expectations by a wide margin.

On the downside


Nimble Storage (NYSE: NMBL) reported a wider than expected loss for the third quarter.


Mentor Graphics (Nasdaq: MENT) reported lower third quarter earnings that fell short of expectations and forecast current quarter results below estimates.


Universal Insurance Holdings (NYSE: UVE) issued a response to misleading and inaccurate allegations against the company but the stock price dropped.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 7 to 3 on both the NYSE and on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 climbed 13 points to 2,094. Bitcoin lost $3 to $321.
