Louisiana’s Biggest Parkinson’s Conference Gets Local Funding Boost

Despite personal hardships, Baker Glass owner presents $2,350 check at The NeuroMedical Center

(Baton Rouge, LA) On Tuesday, September 6, 2016, movement disorder specialists at The NeuroMedical Center accepted a $2,350 check from Parkinson’s patient and founder of Baker Glass Works, Inc., William “Bill” Mosley. The donation is the result of a 5-month long campaign, “Baker Glass Gives Back,” created by the Mosley family to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. For every windshield the family-owned and operated business replaced between April 1 and August 31, the Mosley’s donated $10. Despite suffering great loss of personal property during the August flooding, the Mosleys repaired a total of 235 windshields--25 more than the year prior. For the second straight year, the money raised by the Mosleys will be used to bring Louisiana’s largest annual Parkinson’s Conference back to Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Bill Mosley founded Baker Glass in 1979 and was a fixture at his successful glass repair operation until 2008 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and eventually had no choice but to turn over the family business to then 18-year-old son, Hunter. Determined to keep building on his father’s reputation as beloved community member and local philanthropist, Hunter founded the “Baker Glass Gives Back” program in Bill’s honor. Before fundraising for local Parkinson’s efforts, the program supported both the Baker and Zachary school systems.

In August 2016, the Mosley’s beloved community of Baker experienced widespread flooding and unprecedented damage. Bill’s home of 38 years saw more than a foot and a half of water. Bill, whose Parkinson’s symptoms have left him bound to a wheelchair, was rescued by boat at 4am on Saturday, August 13. The Mosley family lost all vehicles. Despite losing their home and means of transportation, the Mosleys say their shop was spared, so windshield repairs continued and the “Baker Glass Gives Back” kept going strong.

“Bill, his family, and the entire Baker Glass team are incredible advocates for the local Parkinson’s community, and their seemingly unstoppable support for the cause never ceases to amaze me,” said Bill’s physician, Dr. Gerald J. Calegan who has helped to organize and speak at the Parkinson’s Conference every year since 2012. “Because of the Mosley’s dedication to keep collecting donations through their Baker Glass business, hundreds of patients, caregivers and family members will get to attend this special and very important conference that offers education, information, and messages of hope.”

The annual Parkinson’s Conference held at Pennington in July has been Louisiana’s largest since its inaugural year in 2012. The day-long event has been offered free of charge to community members thanks to the generosity of local businesses, organizations and individuals. Registration for the 6th Annual Parkinson’s Conference will be available online at www.TheNeuroMedicalCenter.com in the spring of 2017.
