Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (“Kindred”) (NYSE:KND) today announced plans to convert Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South, an existing 60-bed long-term acute care (“LTAC”) hospital, into a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in partnership with Community Health Network (“Community”).

The new inpatient rehabilitation hospital will care for adults recovering from conditions such as stroke, neurological disease, injury to the brain or spinal cord, and other long-term illnesses or injuries. The hospital will feature specialized clinical programs including a dedicated brain injury unit for patients suffering from trauma-related neurological conditions. Kindred will manage the day-to-day operations of the new hospital.

Subject to several regulatory and other approvals, Kindred and Community expect the inpatient rehabilitation hospital to open in the first quarter of 2018. Located in Greenwood, a suburb of Indianapolis, the hospital is expected to be a regional rehabilitation destination for patients across central and southern Indiana.

This will be the third joint venture partnership between Kindred and Community. The healthcare providers currently jointly operate both Community Rehabilitation Hospital in Northeast Indianapolis and Community Howard Specialty Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana. The new hospital will be called Community Rehabilitation Hospital South and will be modeled after Community Rehabilitation Hospital in Northeast Indianapolis.

Following the conversion of Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South, Kindred will continue to operate two LTAC hospitals in the Indianapolis market – Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North and Kindred Hospital Indianapolis. Additionally, Kindred provides home health and hospice services throughout the greater Indianapolis market.

“We are constantly evaluating our portfolio and looking for opportunities to reposition our assets so we can provide services more efficiently and effectively to meet our patients’ needs,” said Benjamin A. Breier, Kindred’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The conversion of one of our three LTAC hospitals into an inpatient rehabilitation hospital significantly expands our rehabilitation service offerings and positions Kindred to best serve rehabilitation patients in the local community. In addition, it advances our LTAC criteria strategy by consolidating operations into our two remaining LTACs where we have the capacity to serve the needs of medically complex patients for the entire market.”

“Community Health Network has been a great partner and we are pleased that we can work with them to enhance their rehabilitation services,” said Jason Zachariah, President of Kindred Rehabilitation Services, a division of Kindred. “This quality-focused collaboration with a leading healthcare system will deliver the kind of excellent care that improves patients’ lives and enables our inpatient rehabilitation business to continuously outperform peers in key clinical measures.”

“We are thrilled to once again partner with Kindred to provide exceptional rehabilitative care to those patients who need it,” said Jason Fahrlander, Executive Vice President and President of Acute Care Services for Community Health Network. “This new hospital allows us to further our goal of providing convenient access to specialized post-acute care to help improve the lives of individuals in this region.”
