Mixed open ahead of earnings

The markets opened mixed with the Dow rising 23 points to 22,784 as investors await earnings news. Nasdaq gained 22 points to 6,602.


On the upside


United Continental Holdings (NYSE: UAL) reported a 1.7% gain in consolidated capacity in September.


Nutanix's (Nasdaq: NTNX) Enterprise Cloud Platform software has been certified to run Cloudera Enterprise workloads.


American Airlines (Nasdaq: AAL) lifted its total revenue per available seat mile outlook for the third quarter.

On the downside


Morgan Stanley downgraded Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) from an Overweight rating to an Equal Weight rating.


Axalta Coating System (NYSE: AXTA) lowered its full year earnings and revenue outlook.

Shares of Sprint (NYSE: S) fell for the fifth day.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 5 to 2 on the NYSE and by more than 9 to 5 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 rose 5 points to 2,549. Bitcoin slipped $5 to $4,797.
