Aetna Expands Accountable Care Product in North Carolina with Addition of Cone Health, Triad HealthCare Network

Aetna (NYSE: AET) today announced it has added Cone Health and Triad HealthCare Network (THN) to its accountable care product, effective immediately. Triad HealthCare Network is a subsidiary of Cone Health. Triad HealthCare Network provides employers with a value-based health care option designed to increase quality, improve efficiency, enhance the patient experience and control costs.

Aetna Whole Health brings together Cone Health, Duke Health and WakeMed physicians, hospitals and outpatient facilities, as well as Triad HealthCare Network and WakeMed Key Community Care. Together, they form a robust network that offers patients access to every level of health care service, from prevention and primary care to the most sophisticated medical and surgical specialties.

Employers who choose Aetna Whole Health for their health plan can now leverage Cone Health’s more than 1,200 doctors, six hospitals, three ambulatory care centers, three outpatient surgery centers and three urgent care centers. Triad HealthCare Network is a provider-led collaboration between community physicians and Cone Health where health care providers who share common goals of improving patient care can work together more effectively.

The Aetna Whole Health plan now includes Caswell, Guilford, Randolph and Rockingham counties. The plan has historically served members in Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Lee, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake and Wilson counties. Aetna provides health benefits to more than 500,000 people in North Carolina.

Aetna Whole Health plans are designed to give employers better health care options for their employees with a patient-centric model of health care focused on keeping people healthy, rather than just treating them when they become sick.

The plans feature a new model of health care delivery designed to offer:

  • Enhanced coordination of care between doctors and other care providers
  • Improved patient experience through high quality care management programs
  • Advanced technology that delivers actionable data and quality information to providers
  • Lower overall out-of-pocket costs for members who see providers that are part of the Aetna Whole Health network
  • Better health care outcomes for patients

A new Medicare value-based collaborative arrangement has also been finalized with Triad HealthCare Network (THN), effective immediately. THN patients, especially those with chronic or complex health needs, who enroll in Aetna’s Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans will experience more coordinated care. As part of improved information flow to THN physicians providing care, Aetna nurse case managers will assist THN providers with care coordination, outreach and follow-up services.

“This new agreement deepens our long-standing collaborative relationship with Cone Health, and it is great news for our current and future members in North Carolina,” said Jim Bostian, president of Aetna’s operations in North Carolina. “Aetna is committed to helping our members achieve their personal health ambitions, and we’re thrilled to align our resources with Cone Health so we can connect North Carolinians to coordinated, accessible, affordable and personalized health care in their community.”

“THN’s vision for the future is centered on meeting patients where they are to provide care and keeping them healthy. This agreement will allow us to build on our respective reputations and continue to offer superior service to patients and providers,” says Elissa Langley, chief operating officer, Triad HealthCare Network.

Aetna is working with health care organizations nationwide to develop products and services that support value-driven, patient-centered care for health care consumers. Nationally today, more than seven million Aetna members receive care from doctors committed to the value-based approach, with approximately 53 percent of Aetna claims payments going to doctors and providers who practice value-based care.
