Annapolis Coalition of Black Progressives Pac Launches to Help Elect More People of Color in Annapolis, Maryland

With no African Americans in the top offices in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, a group of young black progressives hopes to change that in the upcoming elections.

ANNAPOLIS, MD, February 17, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Today, a coalition of young black residence throughout Annapolis launched a new political action committee known as the Annapolis Coalition of Black Progressives Pac (ACBP). The new political action committee will focus on electing more progressive people of color to local and statewide positions throughout the City of Annapolis, Maryland. It was created as an effort to give black and brown people a more inclusive seat at the table when it comes to initiating policies that affect their everyday lives.

Since the year 1701, people of color have been underrepresented in political positions of power in the city of Annapolis. With only 1 African American to ever serve as Mayor of Annapolis, John T. Chambers,ACBP's goal is to move Annapolis in the direction of a more inclusive and progressive city. One that will ensure people of color have a voice and a seat at the political table.

"For far too long the voices of the oppressed communities within Annapolis and the cries from within have gone unheard. That stops today… their voice will be heard loud and clear and we will ensure that their voices echo throughout the halls of City Hall and our state capital buildings," said Octavia Brown, Founder, and Executive Director.

ACBP will start making their way throughout the Annapolis community, organizing citizens, holding voter registration drives, talking to potential candidates and raising money from small and big donors. Unhappy with the current Mayor, Gavin Buckley, the group is gearing up to have its own potential candidate that will not only fight to protect the environment but will be a uniting voice for all Annapolis. "It should not matter if you live in a wealthy community by the water or live in the local subsidized community of Bywater, everyone should be treated equal, and have their voices, and basic needs met," said De'Von Brown, Co-Founder and President of Political Affairs.

Driven by her passion to empower and serve low-income and urban communities of color, Octavia M. Brown (Co-Founder/Executive Director), LMSW works as a Mental Health Therapist with a heart for the underprivileged and a mission to empower and bring positive change to all. She holds a Master's of Social Work degree from the University of Maryland.

De'Von Brown, is the Co-Founder and President of Political Affairs. He's a social entrepreneur and owner of Brown Multimedia, a political media and consulting firm that has helped candidates such as Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby, Delegate Nick Mosby, Delegate Shaneka Henson and more. He was one of the main subjects in the award-winning documentary Boys of Baraka and former CEO of Taharka Brothers Ice-cream.
