MALIBU IN TRANSITION
PARADISE LOST AND FOUND
TWO YEARS AFTER
THE 2018 WOOLSEY FIRE
On November 9th, 2018 the most devastating and expensive wildfire in LA County history wreaked havoc with the exclusive oceanfront community of Malibu, California.
The catastrophic loss of homes, personal property, and the economic impact is still not fully quantified, almost 2 years later. Estimates remain in the 6 to 12 billion dollar range. The emotional toll of this loss has been immeasurable, for Woolsey and all fire victims that encounter these all too frequent natural disasters.
As the Woolsey fire broke out, Malibu's residents were forced to flee their homes on short notice as the high winds rapidly fueled the spread of the fire through the Santa Monica Mountains taking aim at the community of Malibu, creating a path of catastrophic destruction.
Wineries, horse farms, resort properties, and homes along Kanan Dume, the magnificently beautiful canyon road that connects residents and visitors to Malibu, the Pacific Ocean, and the 101 Highway, were decimated in many areas, as were many homes in the hills in Malibu, by Paradise Cove, Malibu Park, and Pt. Dume. World-renowned Zuma Beach is adjacent to these areas.
Many of the beautiful scenic vistas which Malibu is known for throughout the world, became moonscapes with charred trees and the burned remains of cars, buildings, and other structures.
Many residents who lost their homes and those whose homes were severely damaged, still struggle two years later with insurance, rebuilding, financial and fire recovery, many in litigation. The rebuilding process and return to normalcy is slowly moving forward.
"We want to acknowledge the resilience of Malibu residents and the local community, as well as all fire victims in CA and the Western US," comments Anne Keshen, a Malibu resident whose home was lost in the Woolsey fire.
"The financial and legal impact of the Woolsey fire on both residents and local businesses has been a long road to recovery," comments Cecilia Chung, legal and business manager for the former Disney estate owned by Anne Keshen that was lost in the Woolsey fire.
As we reflect on the two year anniversary of the Woolsey fire and its impact on the community, a short video has been produced to pay tribute to Malibu's way of life and recovery. #malibustrong
