The sixth annual U.S. Nationals competition highlighted more than 400 K-12 inventors, who showcased inventions that solve problems they see in their everyday lives as well as issues facing the world.

CENTENNIAL, Colo., June 29, 2021 /3BL Media/ – Arrow Electronics presented Ohio high school juniors Soham Joshi and Raaghav Malik with its 2021 Innovation in Electronics Award at the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals award ceremony, held virtually June 24. The sixth annual U.S. Nationals competition highlighted more than 400 K-12 inventors, who showcased inventions that solve problems they see in their everyday lives as well as issues facing the world.

Malik and Joshi, students at Columbus Academy, in Gahanna, Ohio, were recognized for their project, S.E.N.S.E., a Multi-Purpose Robotic Glove Designed to Teach American Sign Language through Guided Manual Motions. S.E.N.S.E. is designed to teach sign language using the sense of touch to individuals with hearing and visual impairments.

The glove is equipped with motors that move the user’s hands into various sign language positions. The device then allows users to evaluate their form. They simply stand in front of a phone, computer or tablet with an external camera, and the device will capture data from the camera while they practice their signs, map their actions and provide personalized feedback on how to improve.

Joshi and Malik’s testing shows that S.E.N.S.E successfully replicates the movement of the human hand and performs American Sign Language signs with 92% accuracy. The goal of the project is to provide a low-cost, portable and accessible way to learn sign language, particularly for those who are both deaf and blind.

“Soham and Raaghav have proven that when you marry merge what is practical with what is possible, you can break down barriers and use technology to improve people’s lives,” said Joe Verrengia, Arrow’s corporate responsibility director.

The Arrow Innovation in Electronics Award is part of the company’s Innovation in Technology awards, which honor the world’s brightest student innovators and emerging technologies, transforming ideas into real and influential achievements that will help people and the communities in which Arrow works.

Competitors participating in the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals were selected after highlighting their inventions at local affiliate events across the United States.
