Welcome to Your New Favourite Room in the House!

It’s been a hot minute since we blogged about a project, but this one could not be skipped over!

We had the opportunity to renovate an open basement space into what’s sure to become the family’s favourite place to be!  The mission?  Create 2 work-from-home office nooks, a bar for entertaining and an inviting space for play!

Let’s see if that was accomplished in this basement renovation, take a look at the before and afters below!

Before

The clients, busy as they were, got started on some updates and came to realize they needed backup.  We loved their vision for a moody space with pops of organic (as seen in the slat wall/ceiling detail for example).  We carried that warmth into the cabinetry and outfitted a double office area as well as the bar in a flat panelled wood-look cabinet.  If you are also looking to drench a space in a dark colour, consider using wood to add warmth.

After

With an Mid-Century Modern style in mind, we opted for flat panel doors, sleek, elongated pulls and horizontal stacked tonal backsplash.

P.S. How much do you love the client’s vintage rug at the bar?  This is the perfect location for a smaller sized rug.  It would have made a living room look itty bitty.  Read more about rug sizes in our blog All about Area Rugs!

Isn’t this an inviting spot to work?  With a view of the canal to the left, and a bar fridge just behind, this couple is pretty well set up for a productive day in their home office!  Here’s a few things we considered in designing this space.

  1. A roll out drawer houses their large laser printer in the tall cabinet separating their desks.
  2. Electrical outlets behind the cabinet housing the printer, as well as under each desk space.
  3. Flush toe kicks for a custom look that keeps it from feeling like kitchen cabinetry.
  4. A proud Tall Cabinet gives interesting custom depths to the design.
  5. Choosing a cabinet colour that provides contrast to the tone of the LVP floors.  In this case, with the floors being dark, we went light for the cabinetry.

Don’t forget a little spot to lounge when your back is talking to you for sitting at a desk too long!  This seating area doubles for when guests are over enjoying the games space or have come in from the outdoors for some shade.

Check out the hidden door into the theatre room.  These are the little details that can thrill and delight, after all, a well-designed home should spark those feelings and more!

I hope you enjoyed the little tour through this multi-function basement; perhaps it sparked some ideas for your own space!

If you need help transforming your space, whether that’s floorplanning in order to maximize function or to hire us for the basement renovation itself, check out this renovation page on our site and book a Free Discovery Call below to get started today!

Live well my friends!
