-- On January 14th, Princess Dr. Cheryl Halpern, the international co-founder of the Visions of Peace Initiative, received the Medali Perdamaian, the Indonesian Medal of Peace. Princess Dr. Cheryl Halpern was presented with this award in recognition for her continuing efforts to promote civility and tolerance throughout the country and focusing especially on Indonesia’s youth. The Medal of Peace was conferred by the Indonesian Government through the Ministry of Education and was bestowed upon Princess Dr. Halpern by the Sultan of Banten. The formal award ceremony was attended by more than 600 guests. Several cultural performances were also presented in tribute to the Visions of Peace Initiative’s programs and expansive outreach.
In response to having received this distinguished acknowledgement, Princess Dr. Halpern commented, "I am humbled and overawed to be recognized by the Government of Indonesia and to be receiving the Medal of Peace. I am proud to have been able to co-found the Visions of Peace Initiative together with my Indonesian family partners and promote peaceful coexistence throughout the Republic. The recognition that is being bestowed upon me with the presentation of the Medal of Peace, the Medali Perdamaian is truly an acknowledgement of the success of our joint initiative to teach the Golden Rule, the Ethic of Reciprocity, that is embraced by every faith, to the Indonesian youth.
Every child has the capacity to be tolerant and to live in dignity. It is our responsibility to teach our youth the Golden Rule; to do unto others as you would want to have done to yourself and conversely not to do to another what you would not want to have done to yourself. This is a concept that is central to the Indonesian motto, ‘Bhinekka Tungal Ika, Unity in Diversity’ since respect for diversity, whether within a family, a school or a community is essential in order to achieve unity. We must remember that civility and tolerance require a commitment to provide every generation with an understanding of the Golden Rule and the Ethic of Reciprocity.”
Through the Visions of Peace Initiative’s programs, Indonesian youth have been exposed to the Golden Rule, and have learned to respect one another regardless of their individual differences. The Visions of Peace Initiative has been motivating Indonesia's youth, aged 5 to 18 years old, to use their artistic preferences to express their concerns for the future and to share their visions regarding tolerance, peace and respect for a peaceful tomorrow. Schools, orphanages and social organizations, representing all religions and ethnic denominations, have participated in the more than 200 VOPI events and programs that have taken place to date.
In conclusion, Princess Dr. Cheryl Halpern noted, "Today, in a world with instantaneous global communication, young Indonesians have a profound opportunity to share their national motto with their international peers and in so doing encourage tolerance and the Golden Rule. By embracing and promoting the Ethic of Reciprocity they can emerge as role models for civil society. With my acceptance of this Medal of Peace I am reaffirming my commitment to continuing the education of the younger generation here in Indonesia, and wherever I might be, to the principle of the Golden Rule and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.”
