What happened?

Shares of financial services company Pathward Financial (NASDAQ: CASH) jumped 4.1% in the afternoon session after the company reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended September 30, 2026. According to the company’s press release, Pathward reported fourth-quarter net income of $38.6 million, or $1.85 a diluted share, above the $1.63 consensus and up from $1.69 a year earlier even though net income was essentially flat with last year’s $38.8 million. Revenue of $183.1 million topped the $179.1 million consensus despite falling 2.7% year over year. The mix shifted underneath that result: card and deposit fee income helped lift noninterest income 12%, and interest income from commercial finance rose $5.6 million on structured-finance originations, while net interest income fell 8% after the sale of a credit-sponsorship portfolio and lower warehouse-finance income.

Operating expenses declined 10%, and new loan originations nearly doubled to $2.2 billion from $1.3 billion. For the full year, net income was $175.7 million, or $8.14 a diluted share, versus $185.9 million, or $7.87, a year earlier, with the higher per-share figure reflecting a lower share count. On the earnings call, management reiterated fiscal 2027 diluted earnings guidance of $9.50 to $10.00, assuming no further rate changes. Credit remains the offset: nonperforming loans and leases rose to 5.61%, and quarterly net charge-offs were $52 million, concentrated in credits the company has already flagged, including renewable-energy projects. Management said it expects credit costs to normalize through fiscal 2027 as those loans are worked down.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $77.10, up 3.9% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us

Pathward Financial’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 6 months ago when the stock dropped 10.9% on the news that its first-quarter 2026 earnings report showed mixed results that appeared to disappoint investors. While the company's revenue of $276.3 million beat analysts' expectations, it still marked a 1.3% decline from the previous year. More concerning for investors were misses on key metrics, including Net Interest Income, which fell 3.8% year-over-year to $125.1 million, coming in below estimates. Furthermore, the company's tangible book value per share of $25.41 missed Wall Street's forecast. Although GAAP earnings per share of $3.35 met expectations, the underperformance in core lending income and key value metrics likely drove the negative market reaction.

Pathward Financial is up 7.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $77.10 per share, it is still trading 22.8% below its 52-week high of $99.93 from April 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Pathward Financial’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,244.
