What happened?
Shares of fluid and coating equipment company Graco (NYSE: GGG) fell 13.5% in the morning session after the company reported declining third-quarter operating and net earnings despite record net sales.
According to a company press release, Graco reported that net sales rose 8 percent to $586.4 million, while operating earnings fell 10 percent to $148.1 million. Net earnings dropped 12 percent to $121.6 million, and adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.81. Both revenue and adjusted profit missed Wall Street's expectations, trailing consensus estimates of $590.5 million and $0.84 per share, respectively. Profitability also weakened as operating margin contracted to 25.3% from 30.3% in the same period last year. Additionally, the company provided fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $625 million at the midpoint, which came in below analyst projections of $648.5 million. Investors reacted negatively to the shrinking profitability and underwhelming outlook, which overshadowed Graco's top-line growth.

What is the market telling us
Graco’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 1 move greater than 5% over the last year. Moves this big are rare for Graco and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 5.2% on the news that the company reported second-quarter earnings results that surpassed analysts' EPS expectations.
While revenue of $590.6 million missed Wall Street's estimates by 3%, it still grew 3.3% year on year. The bottom line was the main driver of the positive sentiment, with earnings per share coming in at $0.87, beating estimates by 6.8% and growing from $0.76 in the same quarter last year. Profitability metrics also showed strength, as the company produced a 53.7% gross profit margin, up 1.3 percentage points year on year. Operating margin improved to 29.6%, up 2.1 percentage points from the previous year, demonstrating efficient management of operating expenses. Furthermore, Graco generated healthy free cash flow of $161.3 million, equivalent to a 27.3% margin. Despite a mixed quarter on the top line, the solid profit margins and earnings beat reassured investors.
Graco is down 14.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $70.80 per share, it is trading 25.3% below its 52-week high of $94.82 from March 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Graco’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $938.05.
