We also continue to move toward closing the sale of our Diabetes Health business, bringing us closer to a more focused portfolio built around Sleep Health, Respiratory Health and Wellness-at-Home. The business is stabilizing as we work through a period of transformation, and we look forward to carrying that momentum into 2027.”

Revenue growth

A company’s long-term performance is an indicator of its overall quality. Any business can report a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul. Over the last five years, AdaptHealth grew its revenue at a mediocre 7.3% compounded annual growth rate, falling short of our standard for the healthcare sector.

AdaptHealth quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within healthcare, a half-decade historical view may miss new innovations or demand cycles. AdaptHealth’s performance shows it grew in the past but relinquished its gains over the last two years, as its revenue fell by 3.9% annually. AdaptHealth year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, AdaptHealth’s revenue fell by 9.1% year on year to $745.6 million but beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 2.7%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 1.4% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. Although this projection is better than its two-year trend, the company’s demand difficulties remain a concern.

Adjusted operating margin

AdaptHealth was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average adjusted operating margin of 6.5% was weak for a healthcare business.

AdaptHealth’s adjusted operating margin decreased by 12.2 percentage points over the last five years. The company’s two-year trajectory also shows it failed to return to peak profitability, as its margin fell by 12.4 percentage points. This poor performance shows its expenses were rising and it couldn’t pass those costs on to its customers.

AdaptHealth trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

In Q3, AdaptHealth generated an adjusted operating margin of negative 20.9%, down 29 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses increased relative to its revenue.

Earnings per share

Revenue trends explain a company’s historical growth, but the long-term change in earnings per share, or EPS, points to the profitability of that growth. For example, a company could inflate its revenue through excessive spending on advertising and promotions.

AdaptHealth’s earnings losses deepened over the last five years as its EPS dropped 62.6% annually. Falling EPS warrants caution, as diminishing earnings could imply changing secular trends and preferences. If conditions shift unexpectedly, AdaptHealth’s low margin of safety could leave its stock price susceptible to large declines.

AdaptHealth trailing 12-month EPS (GAAP)

In Q3, AdaptHealth reported EPS of negative $1.13, down from $0.18 in the same quarter last year. This result missed analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects AdaptHealth to narrow its earnings losses. Analysts forecast its full-year EPS will improve from negative $2.99 to negative $0.03, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from AdaptHealth’s Q3 results

AdaptHealth delivered a mixed quarter, with a revenue beat and full-year EBITDA guidance above Wall Street’s consensus estimates offset by an EPS miss. Shares surged 9.6% to $6.48 immediately after the results.
