What Happened?

Shares of bitcoin development company Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) fell 4.5% in the afternoon session after the company reported a massive second-quarter 2026 earnings miss driven almost entirely by the volatility of its cryptocurrency holdings.

While the company's core software business met analyst expectations with revenue growing 6.9% year-over-year to $122.4 million, that steady performance was completely eclipsed by a staggering bottom-line deficit. The company posted a GAAP loss of $24.45 per share—a stark contrast to Wall Street's consensus estimate for a profit of $3.07.

The primary culprit was the adoption of new fair-value accounting rules during a crypto pullback. The company's operating loss for the quarter included a massive $8.32 billion unrealized loss on its digital assets, a sharp reversal from the $14.05 billion unrealized gain it recorded in the same period last year. Adding pressure to the stock, the price of Bitcoin subsequently fell roughly 2% as the broader market digested these weak results. The sharp markdown and subsequent crypto dip have sparked investor concerns that it could become increasingly difficult for the company to raise further capital to sustain its aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $93.59, down 4.2% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Strategy’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 58 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 29 days ago when the stock gained 7.2% on the news that the company announced a new capital framework as the price of Bitcoin rebounded. The stock's rise was supported by Bitcoin's price climbing back above $61,000. Additionally, investors reacted positively to the company's new Digital Credit Capital Framework, approved by its board on June 29, 2026. This plan includes establishing a large U.S. dollar reserve and authorizing two separate $1 billion repurchase programs—one for its common stock and another for its high-coupon Digital Credit Securities. While Bitcoin remains its primary treasury asset, the framework also allows for the selective monetization, or sale, of up to $1.25 billion of its Bitcoin holdings.

Strategy is down 40.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $93.59 per share, it is trading 76.7% below its 52-week high of $402.01 from August 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Strategy’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,467.
