Itron and Alectra to Deploy Industrial IoT Network Solution Supporting Next-Generation Applications
Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), which is innovating the way utilities and cities manage energy and water, is supporting Alectra Utilities to modernize and improve the utility’s electric distribution grid performance and enable value added services for its 1M+ customers.
As part of the project, Alectra is deploying Itron’s Gen5 Riva meters, multi-purpose industrial IoT (IIoT) network solution and utility management software suite, Utility IQ, designed to help collect and manage electricity consumption data and enable real time decision making.
Itron’s next generation meter technology has distributed intelligence and grid edge capabilities. Distributed intelligence provides utilities with the ability to transform their business operations through powerful edge computing capabilities that allow for unprecedented visibility and control in low and medium voltage distribution networks. Maximizing the benefits of advanced metering infrastructure, utilities can also take advantage of next-generation applications such as enhanced outage detection, electric vehicle management and more.
“The decision to renew our end-of-life metering infrastructure comes at an important time when advancements in technology are paving the way for a modernized grid,” said Shelley Parker, vice president of Metering at Alectra. “Together with Itron, we are preparing to meet the demands of increased electrification, empowering customers to manage their energy requirements and costs, and advancing energy sustainability.”
“Itron’s proven solution gives Alectra the foundation to bring energy innovation to life and enabling grid modernization and sustainability,” said John Marcolini, senior vice president of Networked Solutions at Itron. “Itron’s robust IIoT network combined with its distributed intelligence capabilities enable a new approach to consumer engagement, grid operations and smart city applications – from every single meter.”
Alectra plans to gradually replace its metering infrastructure over the next decade, ensuring a seamless transition to the new technology.
