MARIETTA, GA - A small cat with a big spirit. A man tending church grounds who leaves a drawer open. A growing bond that carries across an ocean and into a new life together. Little Olive, the new book by Evelyn Harrison Heckhaus, tells the story of how the smallest creatures can leave the deepest marks.
The story begins with abandonment. Little Olive, left behind in Hawaii, wanders into the life of Philip, a man working at a church. He leaves a drawer open with a soft towel inside. She curls up and stays. What follows is a journey from Hawaii to North Carolina, from uncertainty to belonging.
But Little Olive is more than a story about finding home. It is a story about discovery. Again and again, the curious cat scratches the surface of ordinary places and unearths what others have lost. A ring with carved initials surfaces in a raised garden, tied to a love story interrupted years before. A forgotten name tag appears in the sand behind a food pantry. A treasured silver thimble, once belonging to a mother, emerges beneath a squash plant in a neighbor's yard.
Each found object carries a story. Each story connects Little Olive to the people around her in ways that transcend the usual boundaries between pet and owner, neighbor and friend. She becomes a therapy cat at a local care center. Her presence at a food pantry brings smiles before groceries. Her curiosity unlocks histories that might otherwise have remained buried.
Heckhaus tells a heartfelt story that remains true to Little Olive's feline nature. The settings shift from sunlit Hawaiian church grounds to quiet North Carolina neighborhoods, each rendered with a sense of place that grounds the story in the real world.
Little Olive is available in hardback and paperback on Amazon.
