The research experience advanced undergraduate study in marine ecosystems through nationally competitive scientific training.
MORAGA, CA / ACCESS Newswire / April 2, 2026 / Saint Mary's College of California undergraduate Sofia Yildirim '27 completed a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded research internship at Washington State University, where she conducted marine biology research focused on common clownfish and reef ecosystem dynamics.
Yildirim's research examined behavioral and ecological patterns within clownfish populations, contributing to a broader scientific understanding of species interactions and environmental conditions within marine systems. The work combined laboratory analysis with applied research methods, providing direct exposure to experimental design, data collection, and scientific interpretation.
The internship was awarded through a competitive national selection process and placed Yildirim within an active research environment alongside faculty and fellow researchers. Yildirim credits the experience with promoting technical skills central to marine biology, including data analysis, observation protocols, and research communication.
Faculty mentorship and structured research opportunities are central to Saint Mary's academic approach. Programs supported by organizations such as the NSF offer undergraduate students access to advanced research environments, strengthening preparation for graduate study and scientific careers.
"Sofia's selection reflects the strength of our science programs and the preparation our students receive," said Alice Baldridge, the Interim Dean of Saint Mary's School of Science. "Such experiences position students to contribute meaningfully to scientific research early in their academic careers."
The research experience continues to inform Yildirim's academic work at Saint Mary's, where expanding opportunities in undergraduate research and global study support students pursuing scientific inquiry across disciplines.
