While nursing shortfall is predicted to continue, the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education approval will increase number of nursing educators

Nightingale College, a national leader in distance learning, today announced it has received accreditation from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSNEd) program. The new degree will help address the nursing shortage crisis by qualifying educators to teach future nurses.

“We are excited to receive the CCNE accreditation because we know this will give us a stronger ability to train more nurses to serve in their own communities,” said Mikhail Shneyder, president and CEO of Nightingale College. “Every nursing school in our country needs more nursing educators in order to meet the demand for more nurses and to solve the nursing shortage.”

The accreditation comes after CCNE accepted Nightingale College’s candidacy for the program in January 2020 and held an on-site evaluation in October 2020. The online school now provides nursing education to students residing in 39 states, along with required clinical training with healthcare partners in 30 locations across the country.

The MSNEd program will provide an additional resource for nurses to become educators, helping expand the number of nurses who can be trained by these educators. The term for the accreditation lasts until Dec. 31, 2024, and it can be extended by two years after another on-site evaluation set for spring of 2024.

Studies show an appropriate-sized nursing staff improves patient safety, mortality rates and overall patient outcomes. One expert summed it up this way for the New York Times: “When hospitals are understaffed, people die.”

For nearly a decade, the U.S. has been facing a critical nursing shortage and it is expected to continue. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services predicts more than 1 million new registered nurses (RNs) will be needed by 2030 to meet healthcare demands. A new survey found that 99% of rural hospitals are experiencing a staffing shortage; 96% of those hospital executives said they are having the most difficulty finding nurses.

In May 2021, Nightingale College was officially accredited provider for continuing education (CE) by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Nightingale College has more information about how students can qualify for tuition assistance or reimbursement here.
