UNC Medical Center & CarolinaEast Specialties Nationally Ranked
UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is ranked nationally across four adult specialties in US News’ 2021-22 “Best Hospitals” report, released today. CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, NC is nationally ranked in one adult specialty.
UNC Medical Center is also cited as the number two hospital in both the Triangle and all of North Carolina while UNC REX in Raleigh is rated as the number three hospital in the Triangle and number three in the state. CarolinaEast is rated as the number 9 hospital in North Carolina.
To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a facility must be rated among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for that specialty. For 2021-22, UNC Medical Center is nationally ranked in the adult specialties of:
- Gynecology
- Urology
- Ear, Nose & Throat
- Rehabilitation
CarolinaEast Medical Center is nationally ranked for the adult specialty of rehabilitation.
In June, UNC Children’s was nationally ranked in seven pediatric specialties in US News’ “Best Children’s Hospitals 2021-2022” report. Those pediatric specialties included:
- Cancer
- Diabetes & Endocrinology
- Pulmonology & Lung Surgery
- Orthopedics
- Urology
- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
- Nephrology
High Performing Specialties
A rating of "high performing" from US News indicates the hospital achieved a high score for that adult specialty, but was outside the top-50 rankings nationally. UNC Medical Center received a high performing rating in the specialties of Cancer, and Gastroenterology & GI Surgery. UNC REX was rated as high performing in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery.
High Performing Common Adult Procedures and Conditions
In a separate category, “Common Adult Procedures and Conditions,” six (6) UNC Health hospitals received rankings of “high performing” for at least one procedure or condition. UNC REX was judged high performing in 17 conditions / procedures while UNC Medical Center was high performing in 11 and CarolinaEast was noted for 10.
