Recently, the 6th Yangtze River Delta Sports Season kicked off at Lion Mountain Cultural Square in Suzhou New District (SND).

The event is co-sponsored by the sports administrations and sports federations of Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, along with the Suzhou Municipal People's Government. Organizers include the Secretariat of the Jiangsu Sports Federation, Jiangsu Social Sports Management Center, Jiangsu International Sports Exchange Center, Suzhou Sports Bureau, and the Administrative Committee of Suzhou New District. Approximately 400 people attended the opening ceremony, including leaders from the Mass Sports Department of the General Administration of Sport of China, officials from the sports bureaus of Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, leaders from Suzhou and SND, and representatives of athletes and referees.
To implement the national strategy for integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and promote coordinated progress in mass fitness initiatives across the region, Shanghai joined with Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui in 2021 to launch the Yangtze River Delta Sports Season under the theme "Green, Health, Integration, and Sharing." Following the success of the previous five editions, the event has become an important platform for mass sports exchanges and cooperation across the YRD region.
Led by the Jiangsu Provincial Administration of Sport, the 6th edition features 24 competitive events and two carnivals running through November. Building on experience from previous editions, this year's program responds to the evolving fitness interests of residents across the YRD. It retains popular sports such as basketball, badminton, and Tai Chi, while introducing trendy activities favored by younger participants, including pickleball, breakdance, frisbee, flag football, and paddleboarding, creating a vibrant blend of traditional and contemporary sports culture. Notably, this marks the first time pickleball and breakdance have been included as official competitive events in the Yangtze River Delta Sports Season.
The event also includes special activities such as a carnival gathering disabled and able-bodied participants and another carnival for social sports instructors. These activities feature a variety of interactive sessions, including fun orienteering races, wheelchair basketball experiences, fitness instruction, and physical fitness testing, with the goal of making sports more accessible to the public. To further enrich this year's Sports Season, exclusive tourism and consumer benefits are offered to all contestants, promoting deeper integration among culture, sports, tourism, and commerce.
On the opening day, multiple competitions got underway simultaneously, creating a lively atmosphere both on and off the field. At Lion Mountain Cultural Square, the 3x3 basketball tournament tipped off with teams from Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui competing intensely. Players' accurate shooting and coordinated teamwork drew enthusiastic applause from spectators. At the inclusive sports carnival venue, disabled and able-bodied participants teamed up in activities such as "Overcome the Challenge Together" and "Walking Hand in Hand," strengthening interaction and sharing the joy of sports. Meanwhile, the inaugural Yangtze River Delta Pickleball Invitational Tournament officially opened at the Chuanliu Pickleball (East China) Industry Base. It is China's first regional pickleball tournament to be held at a full-industry-chain base, and participants praised the venue's professional facilities and attentive services.
The Social Sports Instructors Carnival and the Yangtze River Delta Joint Fitness Campaign were also held at Lion Mountain Cultural Square. Representatives of social sports instructors from Shanghai and the three provinces demonstrated activities such as health-promoting qigong, Tai Chi sword routines, and aerobics, while also providing free physical fitness testing and scientific fitness guidance for the public. In addition, the Yangtze River Delta Recreational Fishing Invitational Tournament will be held at Chushan Ecological Park, offering participants a distinctive leisure sports experience.
Using sports as a bridge, this year's Yangtze River Delta Sports Season is committed to building a platform for resource sharing, industrial integration, and people-to-people connectivity among Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui. The event aims to inject fresh momentum into the high-quality integrated development of sports across YRD and write a new chapter in the integration of the region. At the same time, it fully showcases the appeal and development vitality of Jiangsu, especially Suzhou, while helping establish the YRD as a dynamic sports hub that benefits both urban and rural residents.
