-- Esports betting volume is expanding at roughly twice the rate of esports viewership, according to new analysis published by EsportRanker. The analysis compares betting turnover data across the first quarter of 2026 against viewership recorded at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026, and finds the two metrics have separated structurally rather than seasonally. The finding corrects a widely repeated assumption in the sector: esports audiences have not abandoned tournament broadcasts, and EWC 2026 viewership rose year-on-year in aggregate.

DATA.BET reported that betting turnover across its partner network rose 70.6% year-on-year in Q1 2026, with gross gaming revenue nearly doubling, placed bets up 33.2%, combination bets up 72.1%, and the active player base growing more than 56%. Its four largest titles, Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), Dota 2, League of Legends, and Valorant, all posted double-digit growth, while smaller disciplines outside that group grew 245% by profit.
Viewership over the same period grew at a materially slower rate. Esports Charts recorded EWC 2026's opening week at 20.1 million hours watched, an increase of 10% year-on-year, and week two at 47.8 million hours watched, up 34.4%. The strongest single viewership gain at the tournament was a 33.5% rise in average League of Legends viewers, which remains well below the 70.6% turnover growth recorded on the betting side.

Title-level results diverged sharply from that aggregate, with EsportRanker's analysis finding gains and declines running simultaneously at the same event:
- League of Legends peaked at 1,477,470 concurrent viewers and generated 23.6 million hours watched, with average viewers up 33.5% and peak viewers up 22.2% year-on-year despite a shorter broadcast schedule.
- Apex Legends grew fastest on peak viewership, reaching approximately 440,360 concurrent viewers, an increase of 74% against the 2025 Midseason Playoffs.
- Free Fire posted its strongest event in four years, with hours watched nearly doubling year-on-year to 11.3 million.
- Valorant fell hardest of any title, with its peak of 247,996 representing a 45.8% decline from approximately 453,000 in 2025.
- The Mobile Legends Mid Season Cup dropped roughly 47% from a record base, falling from approximately 3.07 million concurrent viewers in 2025 to approximately 1,639,197.
EWC 2026 itself set a record on prize money. The Esports World Cup Foundation announced a $75 million total prize pool on 20 January 2026, spanning 25 tournaments across 24 games, with more than 2,000 players and 200 clubs from over 100 countries competing. That figure exceeds the approximately $71.5 million offered in 2025 and roughly $62.5 million in 2024. The tournament also moved venues, running at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from 6 July to 23 August 2026, making it the first edition held outside Saudi Arabia. Foundation CEO Ralf Reichert confirmed the relocation on 20 May 2026, citing regional instability.

EsportRanker's analysis identifies four structural factors behind the growth gap. Live and in-play betting now accounts for 72% to 86% of esports wagering activity across the five largest titles, according to Oddin.gg, meaning a single fixture generates far more wagers than it did in 2023 without requiring additional viewing. Official data consolidation has expanded the number of markets sportsbooks can price reliably, with GRID Esports now controlling the majority of official esports data after acquiring Bayes Esports' intellectual property assets following that company's 2025 insolvency. Mobile-first bettors increasingly wager outside broadcast windows. The competitive calendar also runs year-round across dozens of titles, sustaining handle during periods when no marquee event draws peak audiences.
Betting handle and viewership also concentrate in different games entirely. According to Abios data, CS2 has historically led esports betting turnover at 56%, followed by League of Legends at approximately 24% to 26% and Dota 2 at approximately 14%, with CS2, League of Legends and Valorant together accounting for over 85% of regulated turnover in the first half of 2025. Two of the three largest audiences at EWC 2026 were mobile titles that sit outside that group, and CS2 itself was scheduled for 12 to 23 August, after the viewership period analysed.
The absolute scale of esports betting now exceeds most estimates of the esports industry's own value. According to Sportradar data cited by Riot Games, total global betting turnover involving only League of Legends Esports and the Valorant Champions Tour reached $10.7 billion in 2024.
Bohdan Holovnov, Head of Esports at DATA.BET, described the quarter as a step change for the category when the company published its figures in May 2026.
"Q1 2026 set a new benchmark for what esports betting can deliver," Holovnov said.
Rising volume has been accompanied by rising integrity enforcement. The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) issued a four-year ban to CS2 player Dmytro Tediashvili in October 2025 for match manipulation and betting-related corruption, then confirmed 14 separate disciplinary actions during April 2026 alone. Enforcement reached EWC 2026 directly, where the Dota 2 team PlayTime was disqualified after ESIC provisionally suspended two of its members during an integrity investigation. Riot Games separately eased restrictions on gambling sponsorships across League of Legends and Valorant esports, formally acknowledging betting's established position in the ecosystem it publishes.
Emily Thompson, Lead Analyst at EsportRanker, said the data should change how operators and organisers read the category.
"The industry keeps using viewership as a proxy for betting demand, and 2026 is the year that stopped working. Betting turnover grew 70.6% while the best viewership number at the biggest tournament of the year grew 33.5%. Those are not the same trend," Thompson said.
"What makes this more than a growth story is where the money actually sits. The two biggest audiences at EWC 2026 were mobile titles that barely register in regulated betting turnover, while the single largest betting title had not even played yet. Anyone building an esports strategy off peak viewership charts is reading the wrong signal entirely."
