Unlike ISO 9001, which certifies a company's internal management systems, VPA testing evaluates the physical product itself.

To earn certification, a tool typically goes through three categories of testing:

Precision and tolerance testing.

Spirit levels, squares, and tape measures are checked under controlled conditions to confirm they stay within tight accuracy limits. Premium spirit levels, for example, may need to hold accuracy to within half a millimeter per meter.

Durability and environmental stress testing.

This includes drop tests to confirm a tool holds its calibration after an accidental fall, and temperature testing to make sure extreme heat or cold doesn't warp materials or affect the vial fluid inside a spirit level.

Ergonomics and safety, including the GS (Geprufte Sicherheit) mark.

Testers check for comfortable, practical handling as well as potential hazards such as sharp edges, structural weak points, or the use of restricted materials.

Behind the Certification: How Kapro Tests Its Tools

Certification standards set the bar, but Kapro's own quality process goes further. Alex Hait, Kapro's Vice President of Quality, explained what really happens on the test bench.

According to Hait, Kapro levels are tested across a wide temperature range, roughly -20°C to +50°C, alongside drop tests from a height of about 1.5 meters onto both sides of the tool. Laser products go through similar testing plus an additional vibration test on a dedicated rig. These conditions are considered early. Job-site realities are factored in as far back as the Preliminary Design Review stage, long before a product reaches production.

Hait also pointed to the two most common ways measuring tools fail in the field: being dropped, and water getting inside the housing. Kapro's response is robust structural design paired with impact testing for the first issue, and high IP-rated sealing for the second. Both, he noted, are preventable when they're designed against from the start rather than patched after the fact.

That philosophy plays out in practice. When early samples of a new flat-step ladder showed movement under load, Kapro's team redesigned the connection between the step and the beam before the product ever reached customers. This is one example of how field feedback and internal testing feed back into design.

Calibration is just as deliberate. Every level and laser is calibrated at the end of the production line using dedicated stands, calibration bars, and an optoelectronic machine vision system. As Hait pointed out, the biggest threat to that calibration is rough handling, not age. A level that's been dropped repeatedly is one worth double-checking, which is exactly why drop resistance matters for accuracy, not just structural durability.
