What Happened?

Shares of medical lens company STAAR Surgical (NASDAQ: STAA) jumped 6.4% in the pre-market session after Stifel upgraded the company from Hold to Buy and lifted its price target to $31.00 from $28.00,

StreetInsider reported. Stifel analyst Thomas Stephan wrote in a note to clients that revenue growth is poised to inflect in the second half of 2026, driven by a favorable product mix shift toward the higher-priced EVO+ implantable collamer lens in China alongside easier international comparisons. Stephan highlighted that China's refractive market is recovering, citing data showing refractive revenue across publicly traded ophthalmology providers rebounded from 1% annual growth in 2024 to 9% in 2025. In a scenario analysis, Stifel modeled an 11% compound annual sales growth rate from 2026 to 2028, topping the 8% consensus compiled by FactSet, and noted that presbyopia offers a substantial long-term addressable market.

What Is The Market Telling Us

STAAR Surgical’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 36 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 4 days ago when the stock gained 6.3% on the news that the company announced that its board of directors authorized a share repurchase program of up to $50 million.

In a company press release, the program allows STAAR Surgical to buy back up to $50 million of its common stock over the next twelve months. A share repurchase, or buyback, is when a company purchases its own shares from the market. Buybacks reduce the number of shares outstanding, which can increase earnings per share for remaining shareholders. Investors often read a buyback as a sign that management and the board believe the stock is undervalued and that the company has enough cash to return capital to shareholders.

STAAR Surgical is down 4.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $22.44 per share, it is trading 32.7% below its 52-week high of $33.34 from May 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of STAAR Surgical’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $178.42.
