Women in College Continue to Make Gains in Baseball with the 2023 BFA Women’s College Club Baseball Championships 2023

Game-changing women's college club baseball teams set to compete this March

COMPTON, CA / ACCESSWIRE / March 17, 2023 / During Women's History Month, four women's college club baseball teams have been invited to compete at the second annual BFA Women's College Club Baseball Championships, which will return to the MLB Youth Academy in Compton, CA. This year, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Washington, Occidental College, and students from Montclair State University will compete in a three-game series to take home the title of Women's College Club Baseball Champions. Last year, the University of Washington won the inaugural championship and will return this year to defend their title.

All teams will be hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Training Academy in Redondo Beach, CA for a welcome event, in which all players and coaches will have an opportunity to tour and train in their top-notch facility.

In addition to the four teams that have been invited this year, nearly a dozen more students are working with Baseball For All to jumpstart women's college club baseball programs at their own schools.

"It's exciting to see the growth of college club teams starting on campuses across the country. These pioneering students are building a pathway for young girls who dream of the opportunity to play baseball in college," said Baseball For All founder Justine Siegal, PhD.

This historic tournament fittingly takes place during Women's History Month and is among one of the first times in over 100 years that women in collegiate baseball have had the opportunity to compete with other women's college baseball teams. In the mid-19th century-amidst the women's suffrage movement-Vassar College organized two women's teams. A short while thereafter, 20 more emerged throughout the country.

As women continue to make huge on-field strides in college baseball-most recently with Olivia Pichardo, the first woman to be rostered for an NCAA Division 1 College Baseball program-this women's college club baseball initiative serves as a critical step forward in BFA's efforts to establish women's baseball as an NCAA Emerging Sport and open doors for even more girls to continue playing baseball at the next level.
