Qualcomm, Broadcom, NXP, Infineon, Synaptics, MaxLinear, Others to Benefit

The Strategy Analytics RF & Wireless Components (RFWC) service report, Wi-Fi Forecast 2022 - 2027: New Standards & Applications,” predicts 7.5 percent per year growth in Wi-Fi system shipments as Wi-Fi penetration increases in smart home, home entertainment, and other applications.

The research report makes a case that smart homes and home entertainment devices will account for 70 percent of the growth of Wi-Fi systems shipped between now and 2027. As Wi-Fi breaks into new markets well beyond its long-running PC-centric history, Wi-Fi continues to re-invent itself.

According to Christopher Taylor, Director of the RF & Wireless Components Service and author of the report, “The new power-saving capabilities of Wi-Fi 6 will lead to greater adoption in home automation at the expense of mesh networking protocols such as Z-Wave and ZigBee. We also expect to see growing adoption of Wi-Fi for industrial internet of things applications, for example using HaLow for outdoor and longer-range use cases. The wearables and automotive segments will also rank quite high in terms of percentage growth in Wi-Fi equipped device shipments.”

Stephen Entwistle, VP of Strategic Technologies, added “Growing unit shipments and a transition to the newer Wi-Fi standards with higher initial radio chip prices will combine to drive the Wi-Fi chip market to more than $20 billion by 2027, a nearly 9 percent per year growth from 2022 in real (2022) US dollars. This will benefit Qualcomm, Broadcom, NXP, Infineon, Synaptics, MaxLinear, and a host of other Wi-Fi chip suppliers.”
