What Happened?
Shares of specialty insurance provider Kinsale Capital Group (NYSE: KNSL) jumped 2.7% in the afternoon session after credit rating agency AM Best upgraded the company's Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating, citing a strengthening business profile.
According to a company press release, AM Best raised Kinsale Capital Group's Long-Term ICR to “bbb+” (Good) from “bbb” (Good) and revised the outlook to stable from positive. The upgrade reflects Kinsale's increased scale, established position in the U.S. excess and surplus lines market, and its ability to grow while maintaining disciplined underwriting and strong profitability, the report revealed.
The shares closed the day at $372.85, up 1.6% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Kinsale Capital Group’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 12 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 25 days ago when the stock gained 4.8% on the news that the company reported second-quarter 2026 results that surpassed Wall Street's expectations.
The company posted adjusted earnings of $5.54 per share, beating the consensus forecast of $5.11. Revenue also impressed, coming in at $548.5 million, which was nearly 15% higher than analysts' estimates of $477.3 million. Kinsale's strong performance was driven by solid underwriting results, reflected in a combined ratio of 75.5%, which was better than the 77.8% anticipated by analysts.
The combined ratio is a key measure of profitability for insurers, with a lower figure indicating greater efficiency. While most metrics were strong, the company's book value per share of $89.34 slightly missed expectations, though the significant top- and bottom-line beats ultimately fueled positive investor sentiment.
Kinsale Capital Group is down 5.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $371.03 per share, it is trading 22.5% below its 52-week high of $478.99 from October 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Kinsale Capital Group’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,047.
