When Dan Champ first developed the Broadway Experience, he envisioned high school theater students walking through Times Square, attending world-class performances, and learning from Broadway professionals. What he did not expect was that the same itinerary would resonate just as strongly with a completely different generation of travelers.
That realization came from a simple conversation with his father.
"My dad, who lives in a senior community in Roseville, heard about the trip and said, 'I think senior citizens would love that kind of trip too,'" Champ recalled. "He connected us with the Sun City Roseville Travel Club, and it turned out he was absolutely right."
The result was the first Broadway Experience tour designed specifically for active seniors. Twenty-three travelers joined the inaugural trip to New York City, including three participants who were 86 years old.
For Champ, the experience reinforced something he has long believed: curiosity, adventure, and a love of learning do not fade with age.
"People never outgrow the desire to experience something new," he said. "Travel has a unique way of bringing people together and creating memories that stay with you long after you return home."
The response from travelers echoed that sentiment.
"Myla and Dan were superhuman," said traveler Katie Keefe. "I loved the experience so much."
The Broadway Experience was originally designed for student theater groups, combining entertainment with cultural and historical exploration. In addition to attending three Broadway productions, travelers participated in three Broadway workshops led by industry professionals. The itinerary also included guided tours of New York City, visits to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and time at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
For many participants, the Broadway workshops and the opportunity to experience New York together became unexpected highlights of the trip.
"The workshops were something that was unexpected and enjoyed very much," said traveler Joseph Keefe. "Also, you two made it fun to ride the subways. It wasn't easy keeping track of us, and we felt safe while you guided us to each of our destinations."
While the destinations remained the same, the senior tour developed its own personality.
"The conversations were different, the perspectives were different, but the excitement was exactly the same," Champ said. "It was rewarding to watch everyone enjoy the experience in their own way."
Another traveler, Claudia Schnarre, said she was amazed by how much the group experienced during the short itinerary.
"Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine all the sites packed into three and a half days!" she said.
The successful trip marks a new chapter for Champ Tours, which has spent years creating educational travel experiences. Expanding into senior travel reflects Champ's belief that meaningful travel should be available to people at every stage of life.
Rather than simply sightseeing, he believes thoughtfully planned group travel encourages connection, lifelong learning, and shared experiences. The enthusiastic response from the inaugural Broadway Experience suggests there is growing interest among active seniors for travel that blends entertainment, history, culture, and personal connection.
Joseph Keefe summed up the experience this way: "The best of New York City in a whirlwind of excitement! Don't worry about a thing. Myla and Dan will take care of you!"
As Champ Tours continues to grow, Champ hopes to build on the success of the inaugural Broadway Experience by creating additional opportunities for senior travelers seeking enriching cultural experiences.
"The best trips aren't just about where you go," Champ said. "They're about the people you meet, the experiences you share, and the memories you create together."
