What Happened?

Shares of personal care company Edgewell Personal Care (NYSE: EPC) fell 3.2% in the afternoon session after it reported mixed first-quarter 2026 results that revealed concerning operational trends, despite beating headline profit estimates.

While the company's adjusted earnings of $0.60 per share were 36.4% above analyst expectations, the figure represented a decline from $0.87 in the same quarter last year. Investors likely focused on weakening fundamentals, as organic sales, a key metric that excludes currency effects, fell by 2.4% year-on-year.

Furthermore, profitability was a major concern, with the company's operating margin—a measure of core profitability—shrinking significantly to 3.5% from 9.5% a year ago. This drop occurred even as the gross margin improved, suggesting that rising operating costs are pressuring the bottom line.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Edgewell Personal Care’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 11 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 2 days ago when the stock dropped 3.6% after the oil price surge raised input cost concerns for an industry (personal care) that relies heavily on petroleum-derived ingredients.

Manufacturers faced a renewed margin squeeze just as Estée Lauder and other industry players began cutting headcount and resetting expectations. Furthermore, while personal care was historically considered defensive, recent Conference Board data revealed even beauty and personal care spending intentions softened as inflation fatigue spread.

Edgewell Personal Care is up 34.9% since the beginning of the year, but at $22.74 per share, it is still trading 20.8% below its 52-week high of $28.73 from May 2025. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Edgewell Personal Care’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $521.68.
