Seven new reproductive endocrinologists join HRC Fertility as September cancer awareness observances spotlight the potential impact of treatment on future fertility

HRC Fertility, one of the largest providers of advanced fertility care, today announced the addition of seven reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) physicians to its growing team, expanding the organization’s clinical expertise and capacity to provide advanced fertility care, including fertility preservation and oncofertility services.

The expansion comes during September, when several cancer awareness observances highlight cancers affecting people across different stages of life, including gynecologic, prostate, childhood, blood and thyroid cancers. While the diagnoses and treatment pathways may differ, patients across cancer types can face questions about how treatment may affect their ability to have children. With the addition of these physicians, HRC Fertility is expanding access to specialized fertility preservation care.

Arian Khorshid, MD, FACOG, will join HRC Fertility’s Foster City practice serving the Silicon Valley area. Dr. Khorshid’s research has examined the cost-effectiveness of IVF treatments, the causes of recurrent pregnancy loss and the role of AI in reproductive medicine. Dr. Khorshid was also awarded a highly selective NIH grant for his research on the impact of biological aging on fertility and pregnancy loss.

Among HRC Fertility’s new physicians, Melody Rasouli, MD, MBA brings direct research experience at the intersection of cancer and reproductive medicine. Her research has specifically examined the availability and quality of fertility-preservation information provided to patients through National Cancer Institute (NCI) -designated cancer centers.

In one published study, Dr. Rasouli and her colleagues evaluated whether online oncofertility resources for male patients at NCI cancer centers had improved over a five-year period. She also presented research examining regional barriers to oncofertility information, differences in the information available to male cancer patients and whether cancer-center resources sufficiently direct patients toward fertility-preservation care.

Joining Dr. Rasouli at the Newport Beach location is Atoosa Ghofranian, MD. Dr. Ghofranian’s extensive research includes studies of ovarian reserve, IVF and embryo outcomes, oocyte cryopreservation and fertility preservation, and she has received multiple honors for her work in reproductive medicine, including an Award for Excellence in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Research.

Jacqueline Yano Maher, MD, FACOG will join HRC Fertility’s Pasadena office, bringing extensive clinical and research experience in fertility preservation, ovarian tissue cryopreservation and reproductive care for children and adolescents. Dr. Maher previously served as Director of Female Fertility Preservation at both Children’s National Hospital and NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), where her work included fertility-preservation counseling and ovarian tissue cryopreservation for children and adolescents facing cancer and other fertility-threatening conditions.

Beginning this fall, Dr. Maher will also serve as an Associate Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) and help build a fertility preservation and reproductive health program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for girls with cancer, hemoglobinopathies and other conditions that can lead to premature ovarian insufficiency. HRC Fertility is proud to be an established affiliate to USC Keck Medicine.

Aileen Portugal, MD, FACOG joined the San Diego team after completing her fellowship in REI at Washington University in St. Louis, bringing the added ability to provide care to Spanish-speaking patients. Dr. Portugal’s clinical and research interests include IVF, polycystic ovary syndrome and improving access to fertility care for underserved populations. She has also held leadership roles within the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and contributed to initiatives focused on expanding access and reducing disparities in fertility treatment.

Howard Li, MD, FACOG, will join HRC Fertility’s San Francisco practice. Dr. Li’s clinical research interests include uterine-factor infertility, the biological determinants of diminished ovarian reserve, chronic pelvic pain and reproductive psychiatry. His addition will further expand the specialized expertise available to patients across the Bay Area, including those navigating complex fertility health conditions and fertility-preservation decisions.

Marisa Gigg, MD, FACOG, recently joined the Beverly Hills team and will be practicing at HRC Fertility’s West Los Angeles practice, bringing additional expertise in oncofertility, fertility preservation and reproductive genetics. During her REI fellowship at USC, Dr. Gigg helped establish the institution’s Oncofertility Program, improving coordination between oncofertility and fertility teams to help patients with cancer access timely fertility preservation care. Dr. Gigg’s clinical interests also include PMOS, formerly known as PCOS, and preimplantation genetic testing. She has expertise in the genetic causes of infertility, including inherited conditions and age-related chromosomal abnormalities.

For patients whose cancer treatment may pose a risk to fertility, the window to consider fertility preservation can occur shortly after diagnosis and before treatment begins. HRC Fertility’s expanded physician team will increase the depth of reproductive expertise available to patients while supporting the organization’s continued development of oncofertility and fertility-preservation care.
